I study the Toyota style of management as well as Deming because Toyota is such a successful company coming from the lessons learned since Hiroshima. Each culture learns from experiences, good or bad, and each lesson creates an opportunity for growth. I say growth, not failure because as you go through the years, you realize that what you might think is a failure or pain now, will turn out to be a growth lesson for the future. The first thing I learned is to be quiet. Be quiet, listen, and watch. Transition and change take time. Truth comes with patience. After being quiet, I learned having a firm foundation with a basic consensus understanding the purpose and value, promoting that value throughout the community--a basic covenant, is where this administration must begin.
The first principle of Toyota management style is The Philosophy as the Foundation.
1.“Base your management decisions on a long-term philosophy even at the expense of short-term financial goals”
The primary purpose of HHCA, as well as your own business, is to add value—value to each resident, our larger community, and society in general. We must understand our place in the history of Hidden Hills, or your organization, and build from there. We have to add value to produce value. People are always asking me what our goals are and I say, you know, tell me what the goals are. The goals don’t come from me, they come from you. What do you value. Your home? Your family? Your business? Your community?—they are all the same you cannot separate these entities. Our sense of purpose, and increased values are our long term goal.
We have to take responsibility for our future and the future of our community. We cannot wait for someone to rescue us, we cannot ask someone else to do it for us, it must come from us.
“Be responsible. Strive to decide your own fate. Act with self –reliance and trust in your own abilities. Accept responsibility for your conduct and maintain and improve the skills that enable you to produce added value.” (Liker, 2006)
The second process is designed to bring problems to the surface quickly so they can be solved.
Let me know your thoughts.
