Current Atlanta Public School Schedule

Is anyone as frustrated as I am about school starting in early August? It is still hot, still Summer, Atlanta still has an opportunity to make money on public pools, and other summertime fun activities (i.e. Six Flags, Stone Mountain Park), but our children are in school!
I am also tired of hearing about our young teens dying from being overheated by practicing football in our August heat.

Why does school begin in August rather than September? Why does school end in May rather than June?
Can anyone explain what appears to be obvious?
